Economy adds 211,000 jobs; unemployment rate holds steady at 5.0%

The U.S. economy added 211,000 jobs last month, and the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.0 percent. Both figures were released this morning by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics -- and neither came as a surprise. Analysts had expected payroll growth in the neighborhood of 200,000 jobs. They had also agreed that the unemployment rate was likely to hold steady. The big question now is whether the increase in employment was large enough to inspire the Federal Reserve Board to hike interest…
